Easter EGGstravaganza 2014!

Greetings Capon Friends!

For only the second time in our 82 year history, we opened our doors early to host an Easter Weekend EGGstravaganza over the April 17-21 holiday. Over 200 guests joined us for four days of family-filled festivities and, quite frankly, we couldn't think of a better way to begin our 2014 season! We so enjoyed seeing all the familiar faces--as well as several welcome new ones too (Easter Bunny included)!

We thought we’d share with you some of the details from our jam-packed celebration...

The Easter Bunny gives the signal
to begin the Egg Hunt!
Our guest of honor, the Easter Bunny, made its first appearance at Thursday’s steak "Dinner on the Hill" and helped kids of all ages make crafts Friday morning. Later that night, over a dozen guests won fabulous Capon prizes during an Easter Egg Bingo party. Ron & Shirley Stover of Hershey, PA took home the grand prize of a free night stay for two! Saturday's sunny weather made for a perfect afternoon of Easter egg hunts and lawn games. Later that afternoon, many folks ventured down the road to Capon's Rivermeadow Farm for a tour from Farm Supervisor, Sam Brill. The Easter Bunny kept all ages entertained at meals and during programs with hugs and dancing to the silly “Happy Easter (hop, hop)” song- which is now etched into the brains of all participants!  We ended Saturday evening with a long-standing Capon tradition—a campfire sing-a-long and hotdog roast.

Since there was frost on the porch Sunday morning, the sunrise service was held in the Meeting House, which Patty Austin transformed into a sacred space with guest-decorated butterflies. She also recruited Capon guests to participate and provided all the music on the piano. Retired Episcopal priest Manning Smith served as worship leader, John Rosen and Kathy Smith were readers and Paige Stover contributed her vocal talents for several solos. More than 2/3 of all the guests rose early, leaving their warm beds to share in the joyous celebration of new life.

Main House fireplace
Crisp mornings and evenings meant cozy fires in the Main House fireplaces as maintenance supervisor Bub Brill kept them stocked with fresh split logs. Several families participated in the new Caponchase like adventure of listing all the 2014 “refreshes” around Capon. The Larsen & Boyle families found the most and each won a food shop item of their choice (wait til you see all the new products!). Speaking of new Capon stuff, Greg Lang of Frederick MD, was able to guess his way to a new water bottle when he figured out there were exactly 263 jelly beans inside it.  After all the main holiday events were over, guests staying Sunday night settled into the Main living room to hear award-winning bluegrass brothers Buddy & Jack Dunlap from Bud's Collective pick and grin on their guitar and mandolin.

Easter Buffet
Some of the “tweaks” over the weekend were experienced in the dining room. Friday featured lunch tacos and apple pie for dessert at dinner.  The Saturday evening meal also added extra sweets such as coconut bars and strawberry sundaes.  Since it was Easter, the Sunday midday meal was a special buffet with ham, roast beef and a dessert smorgasbord. Those who stayed over for Monday lunch were treated to spaghetti sauce with Capon sausage.

We hope all of you enjoyed the Easter holiday as much as we did... It will be five more years until the calendar lines up for another Easter celebration at Capon!
